Why Should I Follow This Course?

This course covers a broad range of engineering disciplines. including mechanical, electrical, electronic, and design. It provides practical, hands-on learning  and builds skills directly relevant to the workplace. The course encourages project-based work, teamwork, and problem-solving. It is recognised by major employers like Siemens, Rolls-Royce, Network Rail, and BAE Systems and offers more depth than A-levels in a single subject area, so is great for students who are confident they want to pursue a technical or engineering career path.

What Teaching and Learning Methods Will Be Used?

The course involves a mixture of classroom based learning (theory), practical workshops and labs, computer based learning, group work and collaborative projects, independent research and assignments, problem solving and project based learning and exam preparation and revision. Teachers will focus on real life engineering problems and students will get to design, test and improve systems or components, mimicking real engineering projects. Practical elements will focus on circuit design and testing, mechanical assembly and fabrication as well as programming and automation.

What Will I Learn?

In year one you will complete taught units on: Science for engineering, Materials science, Mathematics for engineering, Computer-aided design (CAD), Mechanical operations, Lean and quality, Inspection and testing, Maintenance, Mechanical design.

In year two you will complete units on: Principles of mechanical engineering, Principles of electrical and electronic engineering, Automation control and robotics, Electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic control, Systems and programming, Computer aided manufacturing (CAM), Project management for engineers, Promoting continuous improvement, Business for engineering

Where Will This Qualification Take Me?

This qualification will prepare you for employment in the engineering sector and progression into engineering-related apprenticeships. Since it is a Level 3 qualification, it will also support further study at university or entry onto a degree level apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

At least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including either Maths and English language at grade 4.

This can include one Level 2 BTEC (or equivalent course) at Pass or above.
