Dance Curriculum Plan 2016 2017

Key Stage 3 Dance

At Westwood dance is a part of the normal timetable. The lessons are designed not to be gender specific and creativity and confidence are nurtured as well as the promotion of exercise.  In year 7 pupils are taught how to choreograph and perform and in year 8 they look at styles of dance from around the world and throughout recent history. Timetable permitting year 9 dance is offered as an option and pupils wanting to study dance in more depth are introduced to more complex skills that will prepare them for Key Stage 4.

Key Stage 4 Dance

In Key stage 4 pupils can opt to take Edexcel BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Performing Arts (DANCE). In this two year course pupils study three units of work over a period of two years.  Each unit can be completed to distinction, merit or pass level (comparable to GCSE A, B and C).
1. Preparation, Performance. The unit deals with the skills required to choreograph, rehearse and perform a piece for a live performance whilst simultaneously reviewing the “journey” in a log book.
2. Dance Skills. This unit deals with different styles of dance, developing the physical and interpretive skills appropriate for each chosen style.  Reviewing progress will add a theoretical element to studies.
3. Individual Showcase. In this unit a student will need to respond to a job opportunity by writing a letter of application, they will then need to choreograph two solos for an audition.

Pupils still interested in performance may progress to BTEC Performing Arts Level 3 in Key Stage 5.

Regular Events

Every year dancers have opportunities to perform, there is an annual production at Christmas time and performances are often created for charity events such as Comic Relief or Children in Need. There are also trips organised to Birmingham to see professional dance works and a variety of Dance Clubs run regularly throughout the year for all ages and tastes. Dance club members and Btec dancers are encouraged to perform in assemblies and teaching opportunities are provided for pupils with occasional visits to Primary schools.
